What is military information operations?
Information operations is the acquisition and accumulation of information about a combatant that is used to defend our military and country. To inhibit the decision-making capabilities of military opponents, information operations must employ efficient use of intelligence, leadership and information system resources.
The purpose of OPSEC is to reduce the vulnerability of US and multinational forces from successful adversary exploitation of critical information. It applies to all activities that prepare, sustain, or employ forces.

Operations in the Information Environment (OIE) — Actions taken to generate, preserve, and apply information power against a relevant actor in order to increase or protect competitive advantage or combat power potential within all domains of the operating environment.

At its core, information operations (IO) are the integration of information-related capabilities during military operations to influence, disrupt, corrupt, or usurp the decision making of adversaries and potential adversaries while protecting our own. (See figure.)
