What is being done to protect the American bison?
The 2020 Bison Conservation Initiative builds on previous DOI conservation efforts and reaffirms commitments to large, wild, connected, genetically diverse and healthy bison herds and to conservation that includes shared stewardship, ecological restoration and cultural restoration.
Will bison ever recover?
Today some 500,000 bison have been restored in over 6,000 locations, including public lands, private ranches, and Native American lands. As they return, researchers like me are gaining insights into their substantial ecological and conservation value.
How many bison are left in the world 2021?
As few as 12,000 to 15,000 pure bison are estimated to remain in the world.
What saved the bison?
With the establishment of additional populations on public and private lands across the Great Plains, the species was saved from immediate extinction. By 1920 it numbered about 12,000.

What eats a bison?
Although bison have few natural predators because of their size, wolves, mountain lions and bears do attack the very young or very old bison. In some areas, people legally hunt bison or raise them for their meat and hides.
How did we bring bison back?
Some former bison hunters, including prominent figures like William ‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody and future President Theodore Roosevelt, gathered the few surviving animals, promoted captive breeding and eventually reintroduced them to the natural landscape.
How did the bison survive?
During the cold winter season, bison develop thick, woolly coats that help protect them from freezing temperatures and harsh winds. With thick coats and creating a low profile, bison can survive the same storm that would kill many domestic livestock.

How did the American Bison Society help bison?
This effort involved using our Bronx Zoo to propagate seed stock. In 2005, WCS spearheaded an American Bison Society initiative to help build the social and scientific foundations for the ecological restoration of bison.
Are there any wild bison left in North America?
Time is running out. Most bison in North America are held in captivity and managed for meat production. Just a few wild bison herds remain and most of these are small isolated populations facing the gradual loss of genetic diversity. We need to expand existing herds and reintroduce bison to new large landscapes to avoid ecological extinction.
