What gas should I use for my Mercury outboard?
Answer: Fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol are considered acceptable for use in Mercury engines. Fuels containing higher levels of ethanol are not considered acceptable for use, and the use of fuels containing ethanol higher than 10 percent can void the warranty.
Do you have to mix oil and gas for a Mercury outboard motor?
Older two-stroke Mercury outboard motors require hand mixing of oil and gas. Newer models like the OptiMax motors have an oil injection system that keeps the ratio of gas to oil correct.
What should the fuel ratio be on an outboard?
If all else fails and you’re absolutely stuck we recommend a mix of 50:1 for outboards older than 1980 and 100:1 for outboards manufactured since 1980. That is 50 parts fuel to 1 part oil and 100 parts fuel to 1 part oil respectively.
How much outboard motor oil for a gallon of gas?
As a general rule of thumb, add three ounces of Mercury 2 stroke premium outboard motor oil for each gallon of gas.
What kind of oil to use in a 2 stroke outboard?
For 2-Stroke outboards that require a 50:1 premix of oil/gas we’ve put together the following chart to simplify the calculations. Use ONLY 2-stroke outboard motor oil with an NMMA (National Marine Manufacturer’s Assoc.) certified rating of TCW3. Never use automobile motor oil in your 2-stroke outboard!
