How do you score the Burt reading test?
A reading test consisting of 110 increasingly difficult words, it is intended to be a one-on-one test of a child’s recognition of those words, as they read them out to the teacher. The teacher keeps a record of which words the child read correctly, and at the end of the test the final tally provides their score.

How do you calculate reading age?
(i) Calculate L, the average sentence length (number of words ÷ number of sentences). Estimate the number of sentences to the nearest tenth, where necessary. (ii) Calculate N, the average number of syllables per word (number of syllables ÷ number of words). So Reading Age = ( L × 0.39 ) + ( N × 11.8 ) – 10.59 years.

Why is the NGRT important for eal students?
